Import Regulations in South Africa
As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), South Africa follows the Harmonized System (HS) of import classification. The country is a member of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and benefits from free exchange of trade with Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Swaziland.

Lots of goods, especially industrial inputs, enter duty free. If the duties apply, the rates generally fall between five and 25%, although some commodities attract a higher rate.

Extra duties are levied on specific luxury goods such as alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and new cars.

The required documentation for customs clearance is usually a Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading, a Packing List, Certificate of Origin Form DA59 and Customs Form DA500.
