Import Regulations in El Salvador
Being a member of the Central Common market (CACM), most of El Salvador's tariffs do not exceed the maximum common external tariff of 15%. Exceptions are the imports of clothing, certain agricultural and meat products, vehicles, and certain other items subject to tariffs ranging from 15 to 30 percent-and in a few significant cases even higher.

Agricultural goods face the highest tariffs-duties up to 40 percent are levied on certain food imports and alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages are subject to 30 percent duty, a specific tax based on alcoholic content, and an ad valorem 20 percent sales tax.

The required documents are passport (copy); visa (copy); inventory (valued); Customs Declaration; Residence and Work Permit or Business Visa; letter from employer confirming employment; confirmation to return articles like works of art, household machinery, electronics, etc; Power of Attorney.

Shipper must be in country to clear shipment. Vegetable and plants products require a phytosanitary certificate from origin and destination countries.

It is recommended to check with local authorities regarding any questions about automobiles, prohibited items, restricted goods, duty-free entry of household goods, pets, alcohol, etc.

The list of paintings and artifacts is due to the fact that it is illegal to export any kind of artifact or painting unless you can prove that it was brought into the country with it.

The prohibited items are firearms; ammunition; drugs; pornographic material and alcohol.
